I have been pondering this problem for years. See, this is why I think too much.. About things that don’t really need to be thought about..
It all started when the England One Day Cricket team appeared in their (then) new strip. Something wasn’t right. Instead of looking imposing and authoritative.. They looked like Norman Wisdom…
.. But you don’t want your national One Day cricket team to look like one of the greatest comic geniuses of all time. The reason they looked like this? It was nothing to do with them personally.. It was the placement of 3 perfectly innocent stripes offset on the peak of their caps.. That is all! Note also the stripes on the trouser veering off at a tangent.. End result.. J Lo bum. Fantastic on J Lo, but on a bunch of hardy cricketers? Who designed this and didn’t see it? I saw it and I was in another country!!
Take also the brilliant Rafael Nadal, when he first burst on to the scene in his pirate pants, cut off T, and bandana, with guns and pecs heaving, he must have REALLY intimidated his opponents, and that was before a ball was even struck.
I should just say at this point for anyone who doesn’t follow tennis.. Although a warrior on court, Rafa is clearly one of the nicest blokes on the planet.
Recently he went to shorter pants and a normal T shirt, the first of which had a stripe across the pecs so they disappeared along with the guns. Intimidating? No, now he just looks cute!
As a final note for any readers from across the pond.. Next time you are watching American Football (sorry, I’m British!), notice how the players go from very scary to almost comedic when they push their helmets back from their face whilst having a breather! Again.. this is meant in the nicest possible way, I love this sport. It’s just my strange way of looking at the world..
